Electrical Testing | Wantage
Inspection | Performance | Maintenance
Electrical faults happen. When they do, there’s not much worst.
The best way to combat the unexpected? Enter EICRs. An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a safety test for your fixed wiring.
But what does that mean?
It’s similar to an MOT you’d get for a car, but for your home or business. And as we know, to keep your car running smoothly it needs some maintenance from time to time.
We’re happy to assess & maintain your wiring, so you know your home is running safely & efficiently in the background.

Questions?
-
A detailed inspection of your fixed wiring
ie. The cables that supply your sockets, lights & anything coming from the fuse box(es).
Testing for safety & function of accessories
ie. making sure sockets, lights, switches etc work correctly & are safe for use.
Overall safety of electrical system
Relevant certification
-
PAT testing (portable appliance testing) certificate.
Testing of Equipment plugged into sockets.
Testing of hobs, cookers & white goods.
A guaranteed pass (satisfactory certificate)
As remedial work may be needed first.
Fixing faults
An EICR is a test & inspection only (unless fixing any issues has also been agreed prior to testing).
-
In short, EIRCs have no standard time period until their next inspection date is due. They can change with every property as properties differ.
Typical Industry Standards
Commercial
Most workplace environments need an EICR every 5 years.
Typical workplaces which require 5 yearly fixed wire testing include; offices, labs, churches, schools & universities, rental properties (single let & HMOs), hotels & restaurants.
In cases where the use of the property is at higher risk of damage (near water, dust or open to the general public) you may have a shorter inspection period, from 1-3 years.
Residential
Most houses can expect an EICR to last 10 years.
In some cases where the install is safe at the time of testing but showing signs of age, this period may be shorter in order to monitor the ongoing condition of your property.
Industrial
Due to the nature of industrial locations, an EICR is usually covered for 3 Years.
This is shorter due to the fact that usually, lots of dust, moisture & machine movement occurs in these settings. Meaning the chances of damage to the electrical system over time is higher.

Coding defines whether your installation passes or fails the test.
Codes can seem confusing, but here’s the main ones you need to know:
C1 - Immediate danger present
This means there is a live part exposed somewhere & it’s possible to touch it right now.
ie. A socket is cracked and you can touch the inner parts of the socket. This will be either rectified on the test or safely isolated immediately.
C2 - Potential danger present, in the event of a fault or change
This means in the event that something changes within the electrics, it may expose a dangerous situation.
Not quite as urgent as a C1, but still requires action before a satisfactory certificate can be produced.
ie. An outdated, wooden fuse board with re-wireable fuses. While they are not immediately dangerous, in the event of a new fault, your fusebox may not have the technology to protect you.
C3 - Improvement Recommended
No danger has been detected, but you can still improve your system.
ie. Surface level items, such as a boiler circuit being wired together with sockets in your house. This means that if you have a fault with one of your sockets, your heating may not work.
FI - Further Investigation
No danger detected, but the inspector couldn't fully verify something & may have reason to believe there is potential danger.
ie. If it looks like a you have bonding in place (a safety earth cable connected to your main water or gas pipes), but the inspector could not find the main water pipe during the test.
C1, C2 & FI- Unsatisfactory certificates will be produced if any of these codes are found.
C3 items only - Satisfactory certificate can be produced with recommendations for improvements.
-
No*. But you will need to take action on the following items before we can safely pass your installation:
Fix the issues without delay for C1 coded items (these will be fixed or isolated on the day for safety reasons).
Fix all C2 items.
Verify any FI codes.
Then once again, like an MOT, we’ll provide you with confirmation of any remedial work taken & update the certificate.
See the above FAQ for coding definitions
*One exception to this rule is if another contractor provides an unsatisfactory EICR, we would need to complete a new one for ourselves.
